US, Europe, and Australia report monkeypox cases
New or suspected monkeypox cases have been reported in NYC, Sweden, Canada, and Australia’s two largest cities. The rare and potentially deadly cousin of smallpox, once only found in Africa, is now spreading worldwide.
Scientists are searching the northern hemisphere for links between recent monkeypox cases outbreaks.
The pathogen causes flu-like symptoms followed by a face-to-body rash. Two weeks to a month is typical.The illness typically continues for a period of two weeks to one month.
Body fluids, infectious sores, contaminated material, or large respiratory droplets are required for transmission. The virus is only moderately contagious when passed from person to person.
With cases popping up all over the world, even the most rare of occurrences are clearly a threat because the virus has spread so widely.
