A Nigerian court gave a Danish man the death penalty on Friday after finding him guilty of killing his Nigerian wife and 3-year-old daughter at their home in Nigeria in 2018.

The Lagos High Court decided that Peter Nielsen, who is 54 years old, will be hanged. This ends a four-year trial that put Nigeria’s and Denmark’s diplomatic ties to the test.
Executions for capital crimes like murder are rare in Nigeria. A Nigerian human rights lawyer says only two death warrants have been signed since 1999.
Nielsen’s trial has been going on since June 2018, when he was brought into court for the first time. Court records show that his wife, Zainab Ali-Nielsen, was 37 and his daughter, Petra Nielsen, was 3 1/2 when they were killed on April 5, 2018.
Nielsen pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and told the court he found his wife and daughter dead one morning.
