UK pensions minister bans Hikvision cameras
Hikvision cameras have been banned by the UK pensions minister.
UK pensions minister bans Hikvision cameras: As Whitehall’s fears about Chinese CCTV company Hikvision increase, the Department for Work and Pensions will remove cameras made by the controversial company.
As part of a plan to improve its security systems, DWP said it will not use “any security camera equipment made in China.”
UK authorities are investigating Hikvision, which has more than a million cameras in British schools, hospitals and police departments, on claims that it helped the Chinese government persecute the Uighur minority.

The Department of Health has already prohibited any new acquisition of Hikvision equipment. This decision was made after a Hikvision camera caught former Health Secretary Matt Hancock in the summer of 2017 hugging a colleague, which led to Hancock losing his job.
The lawmakers have asked that the firm be prohibited from selling any cameras to the government in any capacity. The Chinese government holds a stake in Hikvision, which has resulted in the company being banned in the United States.
For the next three years, the Department for Work and Pensions is implementing a capital investment program to upgrade and modernize its physical security systems,” the department wrote in a letter to Big Brother Watch. There will be no Chinese-made security camera equipment used in this project.
Hikvision stated that a distribution partner had lost a bid to provide DWP with the cameras.
