In the afternoon hours of Saturday evening (local time), thousands of fans packed into a stadium in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, for a match between two local teams.

At least 174 people died in a stampede at Indonesia’s most popular football game on Sunday, when fans ran onto the field during the game between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. Riot police fired tear gas after fans ran onto the field. 

Police said that the stampede happened during a game in the Indonesian province of East Java when a lot of fans rushed onto the field after Arema FC lost to Persebaya Surabaya. 

The tragedy happened after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch. Videos show the crowd pushing against the barriers and then running into each other.

The game between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya in Kanjuruhan stadium drew approximately 43,000 spectators. A video posted on social media showed dozens of people running inside the stadium, with many screaming for help. One man lying on the ground was surrounded by others who tried to help him.
