Shortage of jet A 1 fuel in Sierra leone

There is a shortage of aviation fuel in Sierra Leone and other nearby countries, like Liberia and Burkina Faso, making it hard for airlines that fly to and from Freetown to do their jobs. As a result, some airlines have had to cancel flights to Freetown.

Turkish Airline and Africa World Airlines canceled flights to Freetown and Monrovia due to a lack of jet A 1 fuel. Only Total Oil Company can import jet fuel in Sierra Leone.

According to the Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA), the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) gives oil companies the exclusive right to sell Jet A 1 fuel, not Sierra Leone’s government.

Why is there shortage of aviation fuel in Sierra leone?

In Nigeria, airlines threatened to close due to expensive Jet ‘A 1’ fuel.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions imposed by the West to subdue Putin are hurting poorer nations, especially those without oil.

The price of crude oil has gone up so much that it is affecting the cost of living in poorer countries where most people don’t make much money.

Sierra Leone, which is poor and doesn’t have oil, is stuck in a trap because the prices of basic goods are going up every day.
