Nigerian churchgoers were killed in the town of Owo.
At the time the gunmen opened fire and bombs went off in a Catholic church in Owo town, southwest of Nigeria, the congregation was engaged in worship. Among the dead are children, according to popular belief.
Church in Ondo attacked by gunmen
The source said that the perpetrators of the attack targeted the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ondo State on Sunday, just as people were gathering inside the building.
A witness who went to the scene and the hospital in Owo, a town in the state where many of the injured are being treated, said that a large number of the dead were children.
It was not immediately clear why the attack occurred or how many people were murdered. No one has come forward to claim responsibility for it.
Attacks and kidnappings for ransom have been carried out by armed gangs in Africa’s most populous country. In southern Nigeria, these kinds of attacks are quite unusual.
