Muslims in Nigeria call on Davido to take down an offensive video against Islam.

Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian singer Davidos, popularly known as Davido, is facing mounting criticism from the Muslim community in Nigeria over an offensive video posted on his social media accounts. In the 15-second video clip, which has garnered over 7 million views on Twitter, another Nigerian singer named Logos Olori can be seen sitting atop a house near a loudspeaker typically used in mosques for the call to prayer.

The video, titled “JAYE LO,” is Davido’s latest single released under his music label Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). It depicts men dressed in white Muslim clothing, appearing to engage in an invocation known as dua in Islam, before transitioning into a lively dance routine.

However, the video has sparked outrage among many Muslims who find it disrespectful and offensive to their faith. Ahmad Ganga, a personal assistant at the Nigerian Federal House of Representatives and a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, took to Twitter to express his condemnation of the video.

“First of all, I’ve unfollowed you, reported you, and deleted all your songs from my phone,” Ganga wrote. “While I condemn your hateful incitement against Islam and Muslims, I encourage my fellow Muslims to do the same to set standards to prevent future occurrences. Moreover, let’s meet in court!”

As the controversy surrounding the video grows, many members of the Muslim community are calling on Davido to take down the video and issue an apology for its insensitive portrayal of their religious practices. They argue that using elements of Islamic tradition in such a manner is offensive and crosses the line of cultural appropriation.

Representatives from various Muslim organizations have also voiced their concerns, urging the singer to show greater respect for religious sensitivities. They emphasize the need for artists to exercise responsibility in their creative expression and be mindful of how their work may impact different communities.

At present, Davido has not publicly responded to the mounting backlash. However, the pressure from the Muslim community is unlikely to dissipate, and the controversy may have broader implications for the artist’s reputation and career.

Religious sensitivities are a crucial aspect of cultural and social harmony, and any form of artistic expression that could be seen as disrespectful or offensive to a particular faith can have wide-reaching consequences. In an increasingly connected world, artists and content creators must be mindful of the diverse audiences their work reaches and strive for greater cultural understanding and respect.

As the call for Davido to take down the video gains momentum, the ball is now in the artist’s court to address the concerns raised by the Nigerian Muslim community and consider the impact of his art on those who hold their faith dear. Only time will tell how this controversy will unfold and whether it will prompt broader discussions within Nigeria’s entertainment industry about responsible and culturally sensitive content creation.
